Butcher Nigel Hofmann is thanking a secret century-old family recipe which has seen his business crowned Supreme Sausage Champion of Yorkshire.

The Wakefield-based family firm came away with top honours at the Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage and Black Pudding Competition. Hofmann's, with three shops in Wakefield city centre and one in Normanton, beat 600 entrants from across the county to win the sausage section.

Nigel said:"We have used the same family recipe for making sausages that has been passed down the generations. "It is a huge honour to win and is a testament to the quality ingredients we put into our products. "We have always bought our pork from local farms."

TV Chef Clarissa Dickson Wright was guest judge at Sunday's event. Hofmann's won the thin sausage section before being declared overall supreme champion.

Organised by the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers' Councils, the annual compe4tition was staged at Bradford's Hanover International Hotel. The competition began in 1988 and has since grown to become the largest regional meat traders' competition in Britain. Hofmann's will now represent Yorkshire in a national event in London in January. The business was established in Wakefield in 1896 by Harry Hofmann and is now run by great grandson Nigel. He was helped to prepare for the event by daughter Emily, eight, and Nigel hopes one day to pass on the secret sausage recipe to her so she can continue the business.
