Harrogate is famous as a genteel spa town and home to the iconic Bettys Tea Shop. However, as a Food Town it offers much more than cakes and has a new star attraction in Fodder.

All this means that any new shop vying for the Yorkshire pound had better be very, very good. Fodder is located outside town behind the Sainsburys supermarket and next door to the Great Yorkshire Showground. It is owned by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and aims to support small scale producers and showcase the best food in Yorkshire.

The building and shop fit are stunning and nearly all labels show the Yorkshire origin of the products. Since opening in June 2009 it has won a number of awards including best independent retailer in Yorkshire, at the Deliciouslyorkshire Awards and was selected as one of the 10 Best Butchers Shops in England in the 2009 Butchers Shop of the Year Awards.

Prices are not the cheapest but reflect Yorkshire value for money. We brought an excellent gammon joint which feed 4 for 5, chicken parcels with sage & onion stuffing (the chicken was slightly dry), two types of sausages, Yorkshire Ginger Brack (a type of cake/tea loaf) from E Botham of Whitby, Apple & Sage Jelly, a selection of Yorkshire beer and Sloe Gin. Other interesting goodies included a Christmas cake kit from Lewis & Coper of Northallerton, Yorkshire wine and a wide range of spices and herbs from Steenbergs.

The meat is prepared in front of you by skilled butchers and a sign explains where the meat came from. A few points to work on would be to expand the sausage offering and be a bit more inventive with the butchery - some more offal, a better mix of top end and traditional cuts would work in this market.

The sausages were firm and meaty, we had the plain pork and the excellent herby Fodder sausage for 6.50 a kilo, both scored 9 out of 10 in our scoring system.

The Yorkshire style is to make large, chunky sausages with a finely ground filing and plenty of kick from the herbs and spices. Fodder delivered this and show that the Fodder butchers sell some the best meat in the county and also make some of the best sausages. They just need to add a few more sausage varieties and show some more creativity (I was disappointed that they were cutting the magnificent piece of beef pictured into stewing steak).

If only every town (or even county) had a shop like this!
