Eastbrook Farm - Helen Browning Organic Chipolatas

sausage of the week By: Eastbrook Farm

Eastbrook Farm was one of the pioneers of the organic food movement, being listed in by Henrietta Green in her seminal Food Lovers Guide published in 1983. Helen Browning is the founder of the farm.

In 2006 they have a split identity - selling bacon and sausages to the mass market via Sainsburys, the Co-op. Morrison and Budgens and also selling a more exotic range of meat via the website and food events.

The Organic Chipolatas are aimed at the "Yummy Mummy" market buying children?s food and cost a pricey 11.75 per kg in Sainsburys. (They sell in tiny 200g packs so you may not notice that you are paying the normal price for premium sausages but buying half the weight.)
They are very small and cook quickly. They certainly taste good and are moist with quite a peppery kick (surprisingly hard in a sausages aimed at children) and little chunks of flavoursome meat. The sausages and bacon are organic and made with quality meat - little shrinkage and no white gunk.

They are not a little farm - this is big, organic business. They source animals from across the UK and have recently begun to use Organic pork from Sweden - make up your own mind about the food miles!

You may see them at food fairs in the Flying Pig - a travelling 'burger bar'. Interestingly I notiched that this was partly funded by DEFRA - i.e. by us taxpayers - an interesting thought when you pay 3 for a Swedish sausage bap?

If you want to try the full range of Helen Browning food you have to go on-line. They sell Pork & Leek sausages at 9.86 a kg, Pork Sausage meat at 8.90 and Lamb & Rosemary sausages at 110.25 a kilo.

As you can see they do have some issues behind the wholesome organic image but they are open and make good sausages. They score 7.5 on our scoring system and are certainly popular with our six year olds!
