Rural Gloucestershire, Harvey Nichols style and stacks of JCB cash come together to make Daylesford Organics. In a "money no object" converted farm sits a beautiful, desirable farm shop, mainly selling own brand organic food.

I approached the shop with a fair bit of sceptism, expecting to see ladies who lunch and general posturing. There is fair amount of both but the food is excellent and not that pricey (assuming you shop in top end food shops etc). Design and craftsmanship is very important here, they even sell organic milk in specially made pouches.

The pork pie won me over. A meaty proper pie made with crisp lard based pastry, good meat, plenty of pepper and a smidgen of jelly. I cant see the LWL eating these so they must serve real people. My basket included the pie, bacon, good home made cakes, award winning cheddar, superb shin of beef and few odds and ends. It cost 25 but contained enough meat for 3 family meals plus the cake and pie. Unfortunately they had sold out of sausages! After making a 50 mile detour through rural Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire I was not best pleased!

Luckily I found most of the range for sale in Selfridges in London and acquired a 450g packet of Cumberland sausages for 3.75.

These were good, with a solid 8/10 on our scoring system(and the bacon was excellent).

I wouldn't call them a Cumberland through, the were not coiled and didn't have the peppery bite and course texture of the proper thing. However as pork sausages they are excellent. The ingredients list 70% pork (free range pork reared on a sister farm in Shropshire), pork fat, breadcrumbs, rice flour, natural skins and seasoning. No preservatives or other nasties. That list means 70% MEAT plus extra added fat - e.g. a proper, meaty sausage. Unlike many organic sausages they are juicy, good cold and are a pleasure to eat.

Despite the hype highly recommended.
