Along with Premium Pork, we tasted Premium Pork & Herb in January 2004. As a group, Pork & Herb received less marks than plain pork. The clear favourite was Morrisons, with AWT, Marks & Spencer, Sainsburys and Tesco all scoring well. We expected Duchy Originals to do better. They are made with a lot of good meat but are dry and peppery, although they are good in a slow cooked casserole. Watch out for more taste tests appearing in the meantime please contact us if you have comments on any of the sausages or would like to participate in a tasting.

Excessively herby and a finely minced texture. Comments included 'no bite' and too much sage. |

Some tasters (mainly men) rated this sausage very highly, women tended to rate is as middling. One of our tasters detected the taste of faggots. Another liked the chunky texture and the balanced sage and onion taste. |

Made under licence by Lazenbys. They certainly have a good provenance and a meaty taste (free range meat) but are let down by a dry texture and a strong peppery taste. They are also expensive and have a high calorie content. |

84% meat but not popular with our tasters. Comments included too many herbs and a bland taste. |

No one picked this as a favourite but it received consistent good marks. Pack contains precise instructions to grill or fry for 19 minutes! Tasters liked the herbs and the long aftertaste but thought that there was too much bread. |

Good sausages, consistently selected in tasters top 3. Made with a chunky mixture of 59% belly and 22% shoulder from outdoor reared meat. At 356 calories per 100g, the calories are some of the highest of all sausages tested (because of the high belly pork content). Recommended but with a caveat on the calorie content. |

Made with 85% meat from outdoor reared pork. We liked the high meat content, course texture and the meaty taste. However some tasters detected an odd aftertaste which might have been the Worcester sauce or the coriander. Good labelling, it even states that the casings are New Zealand lamb. |

Not a great favourite but most tasters gave it good marks. One negative comment was that they seemed a little dry. These are made with 92% meat and flavoured with just sage and pepper. Overall a good, traditional Lincolnshire sausage. |

84% meat and lots of sage give this a traditional, Lincolnshire taste. It has a meatier texture than Tesco Plain Pork but is actually drier. |

Well seasoned but thin, dark meat. Struggled to 3 stars. |
